Can we really get married in Italy at short notice?

Usually, yes. Assuming you are both British and neither of you lives in Italy, the paperwork is relatively straightforward and, if everything runs smoothly, can be done in about six to ten weeks. This is where the time goes.

There is no Italian waiting period for you

Italian couples have their intended marriage posted publicly for eight days before the ceremony. These are the pubblicazioni, the banns. Two British citizens who do not live in Italy have no banns requirement, so once your papers are in order there is no statutory wait before the ceremony. If a comune (the local council) quotes you a lead time, that is its own house rule, not the law.

That matters because house rules can be waived. A comune's regolamento might say the application must be in thirty days ahead, the fee paid by one date, the witnesses' ID copies in by another. The office that wrote those rules can set them aside, and the Italian word for that is deroga. So when a date looks impossible, the question to ask is not whether the process fits, but whether they will grant a deroga.

Where the time goes

Five steps, and only one of them has a fixed wait you cannot shorten:

StepHow longWhat it involves
Certificate of no impediment 28 clear days Each of you gives notice at a UK register office and each of you pays £46.50 in England and Wales. The one wait nobody can shorten.
Bilingual sworn declaration A day or two Sworn before a British solicitor or notary. Asked of British citizens since 2013, and comuni have the Italian ministry's own template.
Apostille on both Next working day at fastest The Foreign Office legalises them: £45 a document direct, or roughly £65 to £90 through a registered firm, depending on speed.
Italian translation Days, or a month Some comuni accept a translation certified by a qualified translator; others want it sworn before an Italian court, and where they do, that appointment is what decides your timeline.
Declaration before the registrar Usually a day or two before the wedding In person, both of you, with an interpreter, to present the documents and declare your intention to marry.

Add those up and, with clean documents and a comune willing to be flexible, six weeks is just about the minimum possible, and ten is more realistic where the translation has to be sworn in court. Italian bureaucracy takes time, so four to six months is the comfortable run, and comune offices slow right down in August.

What that means for your date

Less than six weeks away. You will almost certainly not have time to be legally married in Sicily on that date. Every wedding we plan includes the legal ceremony in Sicily, so we would say so straight away and look with you at the nearest date that works.

Six to ten weeks. A legal wedding in Sicily is feasible, although at the shorter end of that range it may need the comune to waive its own application deadline, which it can do but does not have to, and it depends on how the comune wants the translation done.

Longer than that. Most comfortable. Start with the certificate of no impediment and do not wait for anything else. Just do not start too early either: Italy treats the certificate and the declaration as valid for six months, so both need to be issued within the six months before the wedding.

What changes the answer

If either of you is an Italian citizen, or lives in Italy, the pubblicazioni do apply and you will need longer. For an Italian citizen living in the UK they are requested at the Italian consulate, booked between 180 and 30 days before the wedding with the papers in two weeks before that, and they hold for 180 days. The same care is needed if a previous marriage ended in a divorce that Italy has not yet registered. And every comune has its own form, its own fee and its own view of how far ahead it wants to see you, so the first job is always to ask the particular office, in writing, what it needs. That first job is ours. The full process, step by step, is on the legal route page.
